Early orthodontic treatment, also known as Interceptive or Phase I treatment, is done primarily to correct skeletal or dental issues that arise before all of the permanent teeth erupt, typically between the ages of 7 and 10. The benefits of early treatment include guiding jaw growth, creating necessary space for permanent teeth to erupt, and eliminating habits or traumatic bites.
When should my child see an orthodontist?
Dr. Piskai follows The American Association of Orthodontics’ recommendation that children be evaluated by an orthodontist by age 7. This may sound young, but it is very important to evaluate jaw growth along with the relationship of the primary and permanent teeth before peak growth is complete. That way, if there is a skeletal or dental issue that needs to be corrected, it can be diagnosed and treated at the proper time.
What appliances are used in early treatment?
Expanders, braces, and aligners are all typical appliances used in early treatment, and they may be used alone or in combination with one another. Each patient has different treatment needs and we will recommend the best appliances for each individual case.
Want to straighten your teeth and correct your bite, but don’t want to wear braces? Invisalign is the option you are looking for!
Invisalign clear aligners are a convenient and near invisible treatment option that can be used instead of braces for the majority of our patients. We take a 3-D digital scan of your teeth (no gooey impressions here!), and this scan is what is used to design your individual case. Dr. Piskai has extensive experience and specialized training in Invisalign and she personally sets up all virtual treatment plans to ensure that every patient gets the best possible outcome.
You are given a series of state-of-the art, custom 3-D printed aligners that you change weekly, and each new aligner gently moves your teeth until they are aligned. Our patients also love that they can brush and floss their teeth normally, there are no food restrictions, and there are no emergency appointments due to broken brackets or poking wires! Invisalign aligners only work as well as you wear them so it is essential that they are worn 22 hours a day and only taken out when eating and brushing your teeth.
We always say in the office that Invisalign treatment really is as easy as it seems - wear your aligners and switch them as prescribed to get the smile you’ve always wanted!
Braces are the most traditional method to straighten teeth and have benefitted from incremental improvements to their performance and comfort over the last several decades. Patients are able to choose from metal or clear brackets, as well as the color ties that go around their brackets.
Today, exciting technological advances are emerging that allow for fully customized treatment – treatment that was impossible until now! With the advent of 3-D digital scanning and 3-D printing, custom fit brackets and digital treatment plans are becoming available for patients who select braces for their orthodontic treatment.
Piskai Orthodontics is committed to staying on top of the latest research and technology to bring cutting edge and evidence-based treatment into our practice. We look forward to bringing this new technology to our patients.
